Building codes are legal documents. They regulate construction to protect the health, safety and welfare of people. Typically, codes set requirements for electrical, lighting, ventilation, building construction, building materials, fire safety, and plumbing, among others.

Large umbrella codes such as the
National Electrical Code standardize the various aspects of electrical
construction. With today's complex construction technologies, building
codes must be updated constantly. For example, NFPA (National Fire
Protection Association), through its Standards Council, has issued the 2002
edition of the National Electrical Code® (NEC®). The
new edition includes more than 300 significant changes to the 1999 edition.
The proposed new edition was developed by the National Electrical Code Committee and was recommended with amendments by NFPA's membership.
