The purpose of this publication is to assist in the proper understanding and determination of structural loads in accordance with the 2009 International Building Code (IBC) and ASCE/SEI 7-05, including dead load, occupancy live load, roof live load and environmental loads such as rain, snow, flood, wind and seismic loads. The new edition includes a new chapter on flood loads and a new section on the simplified alternate all-heights wind design procedure in the 2009 IBC. The load requirements of the 2009 IBC and ASCE/SEI 7-05 are presented in a straightforward manner with emphasis placed on the proper application of the provisions in everyday practice. Structural load determination provisions have been organized in comprehensive flowcharts, that provide a road map to guide the reader through the requirements. Included in the flowcharts are the applicable sections numbers and equation numbers from the 2009 IBC and ASCE/SEI 7-05 that pertain to the specific requirements.
Numerous completely worked-out design examples are included in the chapters that illustrate the proper application of the code requirements. These examples follow the steps provided in the referenced flowcharts.
The content of this publication is an excellent resource for civil and structural engineers, architects, code officials, plan reviewers and students who need to understand how to determine structural loads.
