Illinois Contractors License Exams

The state licensure board requires that individuals pass an exam in order to obtain certain trade certifications. Refer to the column to the left for a list of trade exams conducted by this state. Click on the trade license you wish to acquire for a list of mandatory and/or recommended books and documents you will need in preparation for the exam.

 

Construction Regulations:

With the exceptions of public works and roofing, construction is not state-regulated in Illinois. Contractors intending to bid on public works contracts must pre-qualify. Roofing contractors do require state certification, and the information for this exam can be found in this section.

Public Works Prequalifications:

Highway: In order to pre-qualify, contractors must submit financial statements with their applications. Although CPA-audited financial statements are not required, an annual limit of $500,000 is imposed on un-audited financials. Prequalification is valid for 16 months from the date of the financial statement. There are no fee requirements. You may contact:

A performance and liability bond may be required of each bidder of a public works contract involving an amount in excess of $10,000 in a city with a population of 500,000 or more. A payment/performance bond equal to the value of the contract is required, if it is estimated at $25,000 or more.

 

Other: Out-of-state contractors must post a bond with the Department of Employment Security before commencing work on any contract over $5,000.
